About Me

Let's Get Acquainted

I’m Anjule Smothers of Mother Smothers, and I would like to share my family’s experiences as we journey to a healthier lifestyle. I’m a “Do-It-Yourselfer” & mother of seven, classically trained in culinary arts. I’ve worked in the restaurant industry since 2000 in and around the New Orleans area and in the French Quarter on Bourbon Street where I was truly inspired. And let me be honest with y'all: I’m a culinary nerd! If we’re talking nutrition, food, herbs, beer, spirits, wine and gardening, then you’re talking my language. I literally got into the industry because I loved dining out. But what I loved most was going home and recreating the dishes I had just experienced, my friend's dish, and the one I didn't choose but wanted to!

In 2009, after I gave birth to my third child, I took a break from the restaurant industry and focused on my children and growing my family. Like many of us I'm on a path to healthier living with dietary goals. Over the years in some form or another we've subscribed to many different schools of thought: from pesco vegetarian to alkaline/electric aspirations. And let me be the first to say that this choice is not always easy, because typically when adopting these diets we want them to stick. But time and time again for some reason or another we would fall off, dust ourselves off and try harder to satisfy our taste buds, continue our traditions with culinary classics, while still accomplishing our health goals.

I switched my focus on  wholesomely remixing our favorites, while adding new, delicious and sometimes down right scary looking ingredients. Adapting a healthier diet and lifestyle has been one of the hardest and confusing tasks I've ever had to take on given all of the new research and studies, food recalls, and not to mention picky eaters; even with my culinary background, it's difficult to keep up with. I started this site to share with others what information I learned from our family's experiences. This is nothing more than my personal journal that I come back to, to remind me where I’ve been and where I’d like to be in the future. Here is my journey, let’s grow together!
